Ash has been falling over Veyr for as long as the chronicles reach. It settles on roofs, on roads and on the names of the dead, and it forgets nothing — while the embers beneath it go on glowing, patient and awake. Through the gates of the city of Emberwake comes a stranger the townspeople call the Wanderer. The Wanderer does not remember why they are there. The city, however, saw them coming long before they found the gates. There is no prophecy here and no chosen one. The Wanderer mines, forges, fishes, cooks and fights, builds a standing in a place that was never waiting to be saved, and eventually walks out to meet the things that stand at the edge of the ash: world bosses, weekly titans, and finally the reason the ash remembers at all. When there is nothing left to gain, the Ashfall offers the only thing the world has ever offered anyone — the chance to let everything go and begin again, carrying nothing but what was learned.
